The Copper Country Karate Institute
of America is located on the third floor of the Douglas Agency, in
downtown Houghton, MI. Opened in 1987, the CCKIA,
is in it's fourth home in the Copper Country area. One past training
hall included the Calumet Branch of the International Order of Odd
Fellows hall (the first residents of the hall other than the Odd
Fellows since it was built in 1880), and Superior Bodybuilding in
Calumet.
The CCKIA
is proud to have hosted four summer national weekends both at home
in the Keweenaw, as well as in the Mackinaw Island area. Its first
hosting weekend included performances by members of all KIA clubs
in an evening of martial arts demonstration at the Historic Calumet
Theatre. Club members currently range in age from four to 64+ and travel
from up to 60 miles away to grace our dojo. In addition, Calumet
High School physical education students have trained with the CCKIA
since 1992, as the first PE/health curriculum in the state to include
self-defense as one of it's required components. We also have
trained with the football program at neighboring Michigan Technological
University.
We are proud to participate yearly with other KIA
clubs in raising money for the Make-A-Wish foundation and happily pile
into our 1947, Greyhound bus each November to participate in the annual
fall testing, tournament, and awards banquet in beautiful Cleveland
Ohio. The Copper Country Karate
Institute of America is a Century Martial Arts retailer supplying
all types of martial arts equipment.
